i have this system can't boot up
here's what i have
i used an old p2 case w/ 200watts powersupply
Shuttle AK31 motherboard, 1 fan on the Chipset
AMD Duron 900mhz processor
Antec Heatsink,
Harddrive,
Floppy disk,

after i boot up, power imediately shut down.
so i took the processor out, boot fine( no sound indicates anything)
then i test the processor, it's fine. so i can run this motherboard without the processor....hmmm motherboard problem or the powersupply? what's the minimum requirement anyway.

Howdy:

AMD's are power hogs.. 300 watts minimum !!

Murray

so u r pretty sure that's the problem, right?
i ll get a new powersupply then

ff

Nope.. I would double check the CPU fan.. Get a bigger heatsing and fan and give that a go first !!

You are going to need a new power supply whether or not that is the immediate problem, 200W is certainly too low for any recent AMD system. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Definately min 250watt, 300watt prefered.
You say Antec Heatsink? no mention of a fan? it must have one fitted, the heatsink only fits one way around (cut out in base over socket A writing) and you must use heatsink paste on the CPU core.
The fan must be attached to the CPU header and not 2nd fan header. Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

yes, the heatsink has fan about 3000 to 4000 rpm.
and i used plenty of the thermal paste.
but the problem is:

in the AMD's website, they said all u need is 187 watt. so i think 200watt will at least boot it up, right?

but the system shuts down like 2 sec after i turn power on.
and, after i took out the processor to boot, it has no beep but the fans and everything just keep spining.

anyway, i ll see if my new 350watts powersupply gonna do anything.

Is yours a low speed 70 or 80mm fan? just humour me and connect a faster 60mm fan to the CPU header, some motherboards can't sense low speed fans so turn off.
Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

Aye, small amount of thermal paste, but generally the excess will be pushed out of the side which isn't a problem unless it's all over the circuitry ;)

Ok try unplugging your hard drives/CDROM from the system and see if it boots up then, it should do. Regardless, get yourself a 300W PSU anyway since 200 really is below par.
