AMD Athlon XP and cooler paste ?

They say we HAVE to use the "cooler paste" AND the right fan to cool the processor correctly.
No problem in installing the fan. I was only wondering : where do I have to put the paste ? :)
On the little square in the center of the processor (in fact I think that's the processor itself) ?

Thanx a lot for an answer to this n00b question ! This is the first AMD I am mounting so... ;-)
 
To ensure proper cooling you need only to apply a thin layer to the bottom of the heatsink (the thing under the fan). It should not be gushing out of the sides and applying it straight to the processor may not get the heat removed from the correct areas.
