ALV and Display Variants

Does ALV have an inherent and unavoidable weakness, i.e. "if you use complex display variants, run times could be long" ? I am currently in this dilemna. At first I thought if I trim down the no. of fields in my structure, it would help. But unfortunately, it doesn't. If I run my ALV without a display variant, everything seems ok even though I have more than 10,000 entries in my table. But when I use a display variant, that's when all heck breaks loose. My display variants make use of the subtotals, totals, and sorting functions of the ALV. In this scenario the FM 'Reuse_ALV_Grid_Display' alone would take around 8 minutes before I get my report. So I would really appreciate any input on this. Please HELP!!!
