ALTER stmnt - column default value

I'd like to alter a table and add a column:

add_date datetime

Is there a way, in the ALTER statement, to have the value default to the current date -- GETDATE() -- anytime a row is inserted w/out an explicit value for the column.

alter table testx add col5 datetime not null default getdate()

would add that column with a default of 'getdate()' Paul
