Alpha paging

I am running CIM 5.30 on a Proliant ML350 using a Supra FAXmodem 288 for dial out. With the pager notification set to numeric everything works fine. When I set it to Alpha it looks like it tries to dial but then says no dial tone detected. Any ideas?
