Almost no audio

My friend has a problem where he only gets the first chord of audio from his Windows 98 computer. If he plays a CD in the CD-Drive that's connected diretly to the sound card it works fine. All other sounds only play the first chord and that's it.

So far I've had him:
Update drivers
Check all volume settings

Anybody heard of this?

Try adjusting the hardware acceleration for the sound card.

Start> settings > control panel > sounds > audio tab> sound playback advanced button > performance tab > hardware accelration slider
