Almost Expired Password Change in OWA

Greetings-

E2K3 SP1 on W2K3 SP1; FE/BE; I'm having a problem changing passwords, but only those that are in the expiry period.

When a user's password is within the expiry period (14 days), they are presented with an option to change their password when they log into OWA. When trying to change from this interface, the user gets the error:

The specified username contains invalid characters

BUT, when this message is bypassed and the user goes to the options page in OWA, the password change is successful.
