I know that this is an easy question, I am normally an application programmer but have been asked to take over a new network and am still waiting on books. After all that has been said.

I am trying to set some folders on the network to where certian groups can see them while others can not. I have been able to set permissions as to who can get in the folders but they are still visible.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried getting 'properties' on a folder and checking the 'hidden' attribute? If a user has 'view hidden files and folders' turned on, they will be able to see it.

I think what you may be thinking of is shares. Shares can be hidden from non-administrators by ending the share name with a '$' character, like 'share$'. But if you share out e:\users on your server as \\server\Users and then share out a user folder, e:\Users\Jack as \\server\jack$, the share called 'Jack$' won't show up in any share lists, but users will still be able to go to the \\server\Users share and see the Jack folder inside.

I think you should be using permissions to protect your directories, not trying to hide them.

Shares are either visible to everyone or invisible to everyone. As for the hidden flag on folders and files, I recommend that everyone everywhwere on Earth (and elsewhere) immediately set their Explorer to show hidden files. (Microsoft's default view options are almost as wrong as possible.)

People may see the share or folders but permissions keep them from opening them. That's the best you can do.

I haven't lost my mind - I know it's backed up on tape somewhere ....

i have the same problem - i offer a "teamdisk" and want give shares to different teams - but there are a hundreds of them, its very difficult to find the home-share for someone when he has to search throug so many names! is there any other possability to hide shares to who he has no access? maybe a software-solution or anything else?

many thanks in advance!

I too am looking for a solution to this. In my old Novell enviroment, I had no problem hidding shared folders, so even though a shared folder may contain 1000 folders within, each user may only see about 10 or so, the 10 that he and his group had access to... Any suggestions would be great!

I am also looking for a solution to this problem.

I believe that this cannot be accomplished in windows 2000 at this time.

I've mapped a few more drives for my users to help ease the confusion. That way they don't need to Search through 1000 directories to find thier most common drives.

In order to map a drive to a folder in windows 98 it must be shared (Just a note).
