internet browsing works, they have static IP, telnet works, but cannot open their Outlook 97 e-mail and get
"Network Problems Are Preventing Connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server Computer" message.
Worked yesterday, but not today. No changes made anywhere.
Only one remote office and a remote user, also in that same city, also using DSL from the same ISP company, telnet and internet browsing work but no connection to exchange 5.5 e-mail on Outlook 97.
Could this be a DNS issue on the ISP's NS? Think they might have shut down a port because of the "blaster"? dunno! Any help is appreciated!

Just a simple thought. Have you re-booted the problem pc, and checked for viruses? I like to start at the basics. Good luck.

Yes, I did reboot the exchange server, the authentication server, checked the firewall for any changes that would block some smtp but not others, did various virus scans, etc but nothing! Both the local "remote" (down the street) office and the single remote user are both using sbc dsl, but from different locations in this area, and both can get internet, use telnet applications but they both get the same error when they try to open Outlook.
Yesterday, I dialed in on my laptop and got Outlook to work fine, so it just has to be SBC DSL... am I wrong?

That would be my thought. Contact them and see if they are having problems. (Maybe they got "Blasted".)

SBC DSL said they blocked ports 135, 139, and 445 and that is all they did, and should not affect my use of Outlook 97 e-mail. But it does, because I can browse, and use telnet programs but not Outlook 97 email!
I didn't change any network settings, and they did!
Does anyone have a workaround to have win98,XP and Win2K using Outlook 97 to access Exchange 5.5 server remotely on DSL to not use those ports?
Any way to have the client pc use a different port for MSO97 besides the defaults?
