All of a sudden a pivot table is running very slowly then fails

I have been asked to help out our data analyst with a pivot table. We rebuilt the pivot table one field at a time. The pivot table runs quite quickly thru 300,000 records. As soon as we add a certain field (tons) it slows down alot ....then fails with a strange error.
We have compacted and done a repair, any ideas on what else can be done.
