When one of my user logged into his pc this morning, he found every single folder in his pc is now read only and he cannot install a new software he needs to work on. I've tried right click the folders and unchecked the read-only checkbox and also applied to all subfolders and files but when I open the folder properties again the read-only check box is still checked. Anyone have anyidea what's wrong with the pc? By the way he is using widonws xp home edition. Also, I do not have the administrator password as the
engineer who installed the system left the company....

Have anyone encounter this before? Please advise me what should I do now to resolve this read-only issue.

Thanks.

Here's some ideas for you to look at as far as Read only is concerned. (Password ideas at end).

Cannot Change the Read-Only Attribute of System Folders

HOW TO: Remove the Read-Only Attribute While You Copy Files from a CD-ROM in Windows 2000 (Q323002)

From a Command prompt use the ATTRIB command.
Displays or changes file attributes.
This command displays, sets, or removes the Read-Only, Archive, System, and Hidden attributes assigned to files or directories.

ArcSet -- Win9x, NT4, Win2K, WinME, XP
If you ever copied files from a CD-ROM to your hard drive, you've probably noticed that those files will be set to read-only, preventing you from modifying them. Removing the read-only attribute by hand can get really tedious, especially if you're looking at hundreds or thousands of files. ArcSet is a utility that does the job for you. It can automatically reset file attributes on specified files on a drive or in a folder, even recursing through subfolders.

If no password was set at Setup it is possible that you may be able to enter via Safe Mode using the Administrator Account and a blank password.

See if this will work.

Type.....control userpasswords2.....in the run box and reset the administrator's password in the resulting window.

Try the linux boot disk to reset your administator password in windows XP.
