ALG process missing even though firewall is running

I've seen on a few of our XP SP2 clients recently that even though the Windows Firewall/ICS service is started, the alg process is missing. Anybody have any ideas why this is happening? The reason I ask is because we have a remote access site which checks for the alg.exe process before allowing the user to authenticate so obviously if it's missing, it causes some problems. This isn't a case of the user terminating the process either. Anybody have any ideas at all?
