I have a Win2K machine that gets the message "Alert, cover previously removed.....hard drive failure" during boot-up. Is there a fix for this? Or is the hard drive beyond repair?
Make sure the HD's cables are securely connected, and the IDE 1 channel is enabled in BIOS.
If ok, then install a different known working IDE cable, and connect a different power lead to the HD.
If no luck, then connect the HD to the IDE 2 channel.
If still no good, then if possible install the HD as a Slave drive in another system, and run the HD manuf's diagnostics on it.
Your cover message is unrelated. It is resolvable by resetting the alarm in the CMOS setup.
Your BIOS may also be able to autodetect the type of drive. If it can autodetect and can find the drive you have an operating system problem.
