AIX 5.3 does not boot

It does not get past the "Welcome..." screen. I suspect that the root filesystem is full. Can I boot from the CD and perform cleanup?

I had already done most of the steps outlined, but instead of rebooting, I just exited from the shell, wich gave me an error in an endless loop complaining that it cannot load /usr/lib/libc.a. I looked up that file on a parallel system, and it is a soft link to /usr/ccs/lib/libc.a.

The next time around, I will verify the presence of the two files, then reboot via sync;sync;sync;reboot.

Hello errqiq,

I am frustrated because I don't get the SMS menu anymore. It appears to start a normal boot, then it hangs at CA00E1DC.

Any ideas?

CA00E1DC is for dynamic console selection. If it appears, try pressing "0", then ENTER. If it does not help, try "1", then ENTER. There used to be a message stating that you should select your console. Sometimes it is swallowed by the Yeti, but you can select the console blindly.

Some more ideas:

If it is an LPAR, you should set booting into SMS when activating the LPAR. This way you can not miss the menu.

If it is not an LPAR, you should have a service processor menu, in which you can also select SMS boot mode.

Once you reached SMS, select "Boot options" / "Boot- install device" and then CD. If it is an LPAR, be sure that the CD device belongs to the mentioned LPAR.
