So I F-Disked my HD, and re-installed XP Pro.... everything seemed well, then one time after restarting I get this "Help and Support Center" message on the desktop.. which now shows every single time I freaking boot into my desktop! It keeps asking me for/to-have remote assistance. But that is the least of my worries,.. I end up just closing that annoying window.

The MAIN problem is that the computer will just suddenly CRASH on me, and the next thing I know the monitor clicks, goes black, and then I see the RAM testing as the machine starts all over.

So I check the event log, like I was told to do on my last post (before I f-disked), and good grief, there were like 50 error messages! Wow. But I found only 2 that kept coming back. These are the 2:

"AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0xcf8), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance"

"IRQARB: ACPI BIOS indicates that a device will generate IRQ 255. ACPI BIOS has also indicated that the machine has no IRQ 255."

Any ideas what I did wrong? Or what I AM doing wrong? Please help me someone!

I am typing as fast as I can before it kicks me off again. :) My system set up is: Dual P111 1Ghz, 512 MB RAM, on Dual boot machine (Win 2K Pro, and Win XP Pro), running PC Cillin with "personal firewall", machine sits behind hardware firewall (SMC Barricade Router).

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

The issue is discussed here:
And in detail here:
Your choices are:

. Find/Download/Install a newer BIOS for the machine;

. If failing that, reinstall. When XP asks early on to Hit F6 to install SCSI or RAID drivers, hit F7 instead. This will allow the installation of the "Standard" model without ACPI support.

bcastner... you are the freaking MAN, dude! Thanks for your super quick response. I will look into that tonight, when I get an opportunity. Any suggestions on how to rid my startup of that annoying "Help and Support Center" pop up window everytime I start up? Thanks again!

It will take care of itself.

It is reporting an illegal write operation by the BIOS.

Cool,.. that's good news. Thanks again for all your help.

If your going to reinstall XP that should fix any startup problem. This may give you some things to check if you still want too.

folder wont stop opening?
