Hi,

I am running Windows 2003 Server as a terminal server, and it is generally used in a public/kiosk environment for the internet.

Obviously virus and adware/spyware is a threat. I have appropriate virus protection, but wish to implement adware/spyware scanners and cleaners. For any XP/2000 clients I usually use "Adaware" and "Spybot Search and Destroy".

My question is.....Has anyone ever used the above software on 2003 Server, (had any problems). Or is there any other great adware/spyware software that people can recommend that they have used on Windows 2003 server?

Use Spybot and Adware SE plus with adwatch.exe resident on both Windows 2003 server and XP, both cause no problems, I highly recommend running adwatch resident; I have a couple of clients ( the owners)who think they are administrators, if it were not for adwatch.exe, the servers would be plagued with malware. That said, there is a couple thing you need to know....

Adware and Adwatch.exe on XP needed registry tweaks for it to run for a plain jane "user", I do not use power users, and Administrators have no problems. Also for adwatch to run resident upon login, the automatic start tweak within Adware did not work for regular users so I created a shortcut to adwatch.exe and placed it in the "all users" "startup". I believe I needed to increase permissions of the c:\program files\"Lavasoft directory" for regular users to run the program, I remember it balked about loading the definition file.

In the registry search for lavasoft, and give users full permission in the keys found, also go to advanced permissions and allow the permission to propagate through the lavasoft sub keys. Lavasoft entries will come up in some IE sub keys, ignore the findings as far as setting permissions.

If you need to do multiple machines, export the modified lavasoft keys, import them manually to each machine or through a script or GPO entry.

Spybot.. remember to add the Spybot host file entries to the machine's hosts file.

On a Kiosk, the adwatch.exe resident should stop bullets but allowing the "public" Internet access.. Hope you have a bullet proof vest.
