I really need help with getting rid of all these pop up advertisements! Even when I connect to the internet (dont have an explorer open or anything) they pop up. Does anyone have any instructions on how to get rid of some of these? Thanks. Also, this is sort of related to my other question, my computer is really slow, could someone please give me some suggestions on getting all the junk off of here that I dont need? Thanks again!

Licia17: You say that your puter is slow. What size is hard drive and what speed processor do you have? Let me know and I will have a better idea of solving your problem.

Advertisements: If they say Messenger blah blah at the top, then here is how to stop that. Do Start>>Run and type services.msc and hit enter. Find "Messenger" and double click it. Choose Stop and change Startup Type to "Disabled".

Do you have a file-sharing program (Kazaa..etc)?

Slowness: Defragement your hard drive after doing a disk cleanup. Both are in Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools

Get the free version of Popup-Stopper.

Use Spybot:Search and Destory for cleaing your system of spyware.

There is always a freeware version of Adaware.

For your slow PC, do the general cleanup first, as Volkoff007 said, defrag, virus scan, clean up IE by clearing cookies, history, and temp folders.

Do a quick check in Add/Remove files and see if there is any program you're no longer using and remove it.

If your computer is still slow afterwards, than come back for more advice.

FYI, Spybot, Adaware, and Popup-stopper will NOT stop the Messenger ads.
You MUST disable the service, as volkoff007 has pointed out.
Star for volkoff007 for getting it right the first time :-D

Cheers,
Jim
