Is it possible to connect a computer running windows 98 first edition to a ADSL router/ modem and connect to the Internet?

Of course you can. If the ISP is SBC, they'll tell you NO simply because their browser (the SBC Yahoo! browser that is) is meant to be installed on a 300MHz+ Win98SE or later PC. However, you can skip the installation of all the 3rd party extras. All you need is the Enternet software that does PPPoE.

If your ISP is not SBC, then it'll just be a different piece of software to help handle PPPoE or PPPoA.

Would Plusnet be SBC? Do I need extra software then?
What would the software be?

That's a question for Plusnet (and no, they're not SBC). If they require PPPoE or PPPoA (which most DSL providers do), then yes they'll give you software to install.

Just take caution that if you have a slower PC (less than 300MHz, 64MB RAM, or 4MB video card), then chances are that your PC will slow down your overall experience online.
