ADSL sharing on XP to XP lan network

Hi, just wanted to find out if anyone knew what was going on here. Both my
friend and I have Windows XP installed on both systems and have a network
established (through xover cable). We recently had ADSL installed and I was the host computer
while my mate connected through me (through network card) and could also
receive the internet. However for some reason his internet is very very
slow.....MSN messenger, ICQ etc work fine but the simple opening of new
pages and the like takes a very long time. All I did to share the connection
was go to internet sharing and enable it. That pretty much did it. Does
anyone know what is going on with the slow speed he is getting and a
solution if there is any. My computer's internet page loading is just fine.

I can't help you in your situation, however what I did to share DSL is to get a Linksys router and connect both machines to the router and it works great.

The LinkSys Etherfast Router/Firewall is the solution we used also. 2 Win XP Pro boxes 1 ADSL connection. Had a little trouble with initial Router setup and install but once that was solved by checking all cabling it works just fine. This is the link to the product page for the device we use.

I do not work for LinkSys either. Just a suggestion.

I have a thought on this subject, tho not an answer to the question.
When using ADSL with a firewall ( in my case neowatch ), if one shares the internet conection, each time the remote machine logs on and gets an IP address, the firwall naturally freaks out, however if one checks the "trust all machines on the LAN" button, this releases the firewall from the internet as well because of the way ADSL works like a LAN connection.
Any comments ?

You have to remember in the sharing mode, his machine is talking to your machine which in turn is retrieving the stuff from the internat and then sending it on to his machine. Its going to be slower, because thats not the only thing your machine is doing. Now if you had a seperate machine which was just acting as a proxy and firewall with out a bunch of other stuff going on in the background (the normal stuff that goes on thats not required, but its buried in windows) you would see a big improvment in the speed. Thats the advantage of the routers that others have mentioned. Just remember if you are using an always on connection, use a properly configured firewall. And I don't mean the one that windows xp has built in.
