Hi all

i am upgrading our dial-up from isdn to adsl shortly but i have been told that because we have a smtp server, we will need an adsl account with a fixed ip address rather than a dynamic. is this correct and if so does anyone know of other alternatives, as the cost of a fixed ip adsl account is much higher than its counterpart.

help is greatly appreciated

Dave,

It depends. If the SMTP is used only by internal systems (and I would recommend locking it down if its not been done already to only accept connections from internal IP's to stop mail relaying) and external mail comes in via POP3 (rather than SMTP) then you don't need a fixed external IP.
However, if your SMTP server is used to receive external email for forwarding on within your company it would be necessary.

Basically if you don't have a fixed IP at the moment for your internet connection, then you won't need one in the future.
