We have some remote PC's on which we want to install the Exchange 5.5 Admin tool on. Is it possible to extract the installation files for just the Admin tool from the Exchange 5.5 CD and send those to these users instead of requiring them to use the actual Exchange server install program?

Thanks in advance,

This is in respect to the SBS edition but should be about the same for your version. Be sure you understand the permissions before giving this tool out.

That's the easy bit, Spirit, but you didn't answer Vos's question.

Vos, I don't know which bits of the disk are used to install just the Admin tool, but I suspect it is not a discrete part of the CD, so I think you're going to have to send the whole CD (or give access to it all on a share).

Are you worried they might start creating new servers with the disk? So long as they don't have the service account(s) of your current Organisation, there's no way they can add new servers to your existing setup, so you should be safe. And anyway, if you're allowing them to administer Exchange by installing the tool, you have to start trusting them at some point.

Ooops, sorry about that my english lessons they no go good at alll.......

After a quick play with the CD above I copied the following files from the above location;
All FILES from the Exchsrvr\Server\Setup\I386
But ONLY the BIN folder and admin works fine I am guessing that this will not allow the installation of the full product and unfortunately I don't have a test WinNT4 Server box to test it on.

A quick test will verify this. Sorry about that,

Iain

Thanks for the help guys, but no luck so far. Before I posted here I tried copying the entire BIN folder with no luck. Too many missing DLL's.

Now I've found out that those DLL's are included in Exchange 5.5 SP1, so I'm going to work from there and let you guys know if I come up with anything.

Thanks for your help.

Nope, it still bombs even after I've included all the missing DLL's in the source dir. Although it did get me past the missing DLL errors.

I think a big part of the problem is that you need to have Exchange SP1 installed for this method to work, but you can't install Exch SP1 unless you already have some Exchange component installed!
