Admin Console on Windows 98

I don't guess anyone has heard of a way to load the admin console on a Windows 98 computer. I only want my help desk staff to be able to use the remote control feature...nothing else. It's not feasible for me to upgrade their PC's to Win2000 due to older software they must have. Any ideas or "backdoor" methods to allow Remote Control from a Win98 computer.

I'm sure there is something out by now. When I performed an SMS site design about a year ago, I ran into the same issue. The client wanted the help desk to stay on the same platform as the users (Windows 95). Well the admin console does not load on 9x machines.

As an alternative, we purchased third party software called The Computing Edge Web Adminstrator. Here's a link for more information. It was pretty cheap...around $2500 for 5 users license.

I had forgot about Computing Edge. Bought it myself around 1996..now where did I put it.

Thanks for the response. Really thought by now several people would have replied back...I may not be able to do what I'd like (hard to believe with the technology change just in the last 2-3 years).

MS Terminal Server also works well. Put the Admin Console on a W2K server, configure Terminal Server, and install Terminal Server client on W98.

I've also successfully installed Admin Console on W98, but I can't remember how. I think it requires IE 5.x, WMISDK and a registry tweak.

I'm running Terminal Server and Citrix Metaframe (combo) servers BUT I'm only using it for Wyse "dumb" terminals. Never had a need to install the TS client on a PC. Care to give me a little TermServ 101 on doing that? ALSO, think real hard on that Win98 solution...that's what I really need.

Here's the Terminal Server 99 course (not for class credit):

Terminal server requires two parts: server and client (three if you count the licensing -- be sure to understand)

The server component is available on W2K servers through the server Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Components > Terminal Services. Turn "Enable Terminal Services" on. Configuration can be done at Program > Administrative Tools > Terminal Services Configuration. You'll want to be in "terminal server mode", not "application mode."

I believe the client is available off of the W2K CD. See

I'll have to get back to you about Admin Console on W98. I think it needs MMC installed too.

Fraid I do understand about the licensing. Microsoft stripped us poor little hospitals from educational pricing about 2 years ago so I'm afraid $$$ will be an issue. Keep them cards and letters comin'. BTW - The Compaq's are now under 5$ since the buyout. <grin>

Tried the RC Connect. I get errors beginning with &quot;The REMOTE.EXE file is linked to missing export NETAPI32.DLL NetApiBufferFree&quot;. It then continues to two other errors, both reference the REMOTE.EXE file found on the SMS server. The Win98 PC has the NETAPI32.DLL file in the Windows/System directory. Any clues?

No clues. I am not familiar with the utility myself, I would post something on the swynk.com site seeing how thats where the utility was found.

Thanks to all...just can't make it work. This is a tough little program sometimes. BTW - the list of files that need to be copied to the Win98 PC; any chance any of them may not be compatible coming from an NT server -or- maybe they should be put someplace other that Windows/System?
