Additional Domain Controller

I am adding a second domain controller to my site and have a couple questions that I can't seem to find answers to.
Does the domain controller have to also be a global catalog server in order to authenticate user? If so what does a domain controller with no global catalog and not FSMO roles do? (other than provide redundancy).
If someone has some good links to some information on these subjects that would also be appreciated.
