Currently our server is running windows 2000. The rest of our computers are running win 98 with the exception of 5 running win nt. In order for the security options and forcing someone to properlly log on to the server will we need to upgrade the rest of the computers to nt or 2000? If not how can we get it to work. Because right now I have set up an account on the server but it doesnt seem to recognize me logging on from my pc. I am still learning the in's and out's of networking also so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Well, without more information, it's hard to understand exactly what you’re experiencing. Are you running dhcp, wins, dns services on the server? Is the server a domain controller, or are you using it as a workgroup server with local permissions? Do you want to restrict the users to, only logging in to the network? Are the clients and server IP addressed for the same network?- from the command prompt on the nt/win2k machines, run “ipconfig /all” - from the command prompt on the win98 machines, run winipcfg.

To restrict a windows 98 client to specific actions, you must use policy editor (poledit) from the win98 disk on the client. I don’t remember the exact path to execute, but you can search on the disk.

Note – win98 clients can only directly map to shared folders. Example- if the server has a shared folder named SHARES and a subfolder in SHARES named SUB1, that is not shared, the win98 client mapping can only be to SHARES – setting up a mapping to \\SERVER\SHARES\SUB1 will result in a map to \\SERVER\SHARES. If you then share the SUB1 folder you can map to \\SERVER\SUB1.

There is a lot more that could be happening, but I need more info.
