Adding serial no's to msi

Whenever we distribute software using msi's and group policy we have to go around after install and put in the software key. Is there a way to add the serial key to yhe msi without repackaging the software.

Every software is different. No package (or rarely) will be the same. Sometimes the serial numbers are stored in the registry, some in files and some I have no idea! .. but one thing is for sure, I've never ended up having to enter a registration code at the end of my packages yet.

Which software is giving you this trouble?

Sorry i worded that badly. What i meant was software that comes with an ready made msi on the disk asks for the key is there a way to add the key to this msi rather than creating my own package.

You can edit, to a certain point, the .MSI package with Winstall LE 2003 (

http://www.ondemandsoftware.com).

It's the software that comes W2K CD (newer version on web site).

But you need to find out where and how that key is stored.

Here is something you could try:

Using WinInstall:

Run Discover, install your MSI, register it, run Discover again to get snapshot, then enter the Console and try to find where it stores the registry.

Then open the original MSI and add the registry key.

Of course, if it's not in the registry, it's probably a file edit or something.. you will need to do a bit of investigative work
