We currently have a network controlled by a Novell 3.12 (50 User) Server. We have recently inherited a Novell 5.00 (5 User) server from a company we merged with. This server was the only one on their network and hence controlled all the logins etc.. We would like to add this server to our existing network just as a file server so we can back up to it and run reports from it but it will obviously need reconfiguring. Although it is only a 5 user licence, it will only need to be accessed by our backup software and our reports server (NT4) (we don't want to backup the files to this server, although the reports would run a lot quicker, as it is connected to the interent).

I wuold assume we can do this but, will it need to be completely rebuilt (as not sure where disks are!). If this can be done without a rebuild then can anyone point me in the right direction as I haven't a clue when it comes to Novell and our contracted support really aren't being very helpful!

Many Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Verify that the Internal IPX number and the server name are unique. Change the external numbers so that it matches that of the 3.12 server and add it to the network.

I can't think of anything else that would need changing.

Lou

Also change IP address and associated IP details if the NetWare 5.0 server has IP configured.

Thanks for the help so far. However, where do I find the External Numbers on both the 3.12 server and the 5.0 server?

Thanks again.

OK, an update.

The servers both have different names and the specified internal addresses are very different, although if I check the network card setup on the 3.12 server through the monitor screen, it had an address of 00000001 (maybe relevant, see below). I'm not sure where to find the external numbers though.

If I plug the Novell 5 server into the network and fire it up, it starts up fine but then keeps beeping giving errors such as:

Date/Time IPXSPX-5.0.-145 [nMID=5001B]
Router Configuration Error Detected
Node 004..... claims network 00001000 should be 00000001

they each give different Nodes but the same addresses, althuogh some have 5001A and some are IPXSPX-5.0.-172.

Any further suggestions, thanks.

Ignore the 2 posts above, I have found the external number and set them both the same (I was looking for an 8-digiti number and whoever set the server up just put "1"!). This has also stopped the router errors.

Finally, hopefully, how do I add the new server's drives to the same tree, or do I not need to do this?

From the information you have given us, your inherited NetWare 5.x server is your first and only tree - NetWare 3.12 does not use NDS, it only uses Bindery and you cannot add it to NDS. Effectively you would need a seperate user accounts on your 3.12 server (bindery) and your 5.0 server (NDS)

Thanks TheLad, I can now see the server across our network but have now found no-one knows any of the passwords to connect to it with!! The Manager of the company this came from, who is here today, thinks he has them at home. If not, I have found various NLMs that will allow me to reset it anyway. Once this is sorted, my next problem will be to see if I can get the backup software (ArcServe) to see it :).

Thanks again for the help.
