We have several network printers available. I want to add them to the Printers OU in AD but it always asks me what machine they are on. What I mean is I can't just put in the IP address. How can I add these printers to AD so I can apply group policies to them? Do I have to run them all through one machine and add them from their?

Let me add another thing: the printers are connected by creating a new port (when using the add printers) to each PC. When I go to AD users and computers it asks me for a pre-Windows2000 share name (\\share name\printer). Where do I go from here? Thanks!

Are these printers using a JetDirect interface? Are you configuring each client to print directly to the printer?

What you can do, is create the printer at a server, and share the printer. Then direct the clients to print to the shared printer on the server. You should then be able to add it to AD.

Yes, they are using the jetdirect interface and each client currently is configured to print directly to the printer. I added all of the printers to the server but I still can't add them in the printers OU because it says I should publish through the printers folder. Why even have an printer OU if you can't add a printer to it?
