I started working for a company that had a domain name of (the xxxx is in place of what it actually is, to protect the innocent). What the users see in my network places is www. So AD thinks it's the a child of xxxx.com, a domain that doesn't exist. I need to correct this. To that end I've setup a new DC in a new forest. I've named this new domain xxxx.com, now all I need to do is add the tree, correct. Once that's done I'd like to migrate everything to the xxxx.com domain and wipe out the domain (i.e. demote the DC's to members and move them to the xxxx.com domain). Do you think I'm going about this the correct way??

wow! I can describe you my experience:
if you will set up 3 W2k domains in one forest: int.xxx.com ;int.xxx.org and int.zzz.mil... a users , when they browse AD will see 2 int domains!!! They will not be able to distinguish them visually. I'ts a MS W2k bug. MS officially approved that i'ts a bug. It will be corrected in .net.
In your case it is better to establish a trust relationship between 2 forests , then with MS additional tools migrate all you need to the new forest domain. Then delete the old one. But be prepared to have a lot of problems. Althrough it is possible.
