I have a w2k3 domain that needs to be a child domain to a w2k domain so that the user database on the w2k domain is replicated to the w2k3 domain. Has anyone done this successfully?

It is easy. All you neend to do is Forestprep and Domainprep on Windows 2000 root domain controller.
Then do dcpromo in new server.

I have a w2k3 domain that needs to be a child domain to a w2k domain so that the user database on the w2k domain is replicated to the w2k3 domain"

The portion of the database that container the users and groups in the parent (2000) domain will not replicate to a child domain.

Users and groups are stored in the domain naming context, which is what you see when you look at AD Users and Computers. Each domain has its own domain naming context, and therefore its own set of users, groups and computers.

Information from the schema and configuration naming contexts are replicated to all domains in the forest.

Hmmm...

if the user data will not replicate to a child domain then what?

Do I have to downgrade my w2k3 server to w2k or does the other server have to upgraded to w2k3 to replicate?

Just run forestprep and domainprep in the 2000 domain as suggested above and add the 2003 server to the 2000 domain as an additional DC.

You threw me off with this...

"The portion of the database that container the users and groups in the parent (2000) domain will not replicate to a child domain."

My thanks to both of you for your help. It's much appreciated.

That quote is still right. You don't want to create a child domain if you want the data in your existing 2000 domain to replicate to the new server.

You need to join the new server to the existing domain as an additional DC.

Well that certainly clarifies things.

Now I have another question simply because I have to join with another resource that supersedes mine. Will I still be able to create additional accounts on my server as I need or will this be under the responsibility of the admin of the master server?

Sorry if this seems to be getting out of hand question-wise.
