Hi people,

I have a slight question. I currently have around 20 printers which are shared on my network. I have purchased some software which allows me to take control of the printing etc by putting quota etc on.

The software will run on the server and I was speaking to the support team on the other side and he told me that I could share the printer on the server. I know this is possible if the printer is attached to a print server but he said that if it was attached to a workstation and I add it to a server it should work.

This is where you guys come in. I don't think that this is possible without print servers. Am I right in thinking so? The workstations are XP SP2 and the Server is Windows Server 2003 SP1.

Thanks in advance.

you can alwyas in stal a printer on a workstation and then share that printer. one problem with that is if the user that the shared printer is connected too shuts down that computer the printer will no longer function fo r the other user who need to print to it

Hi,

Thats already being done. In order for this software to work it needs the printer to be installed on the server so it recogonises it as a local printer. I think that the only way around this is to buy print servers that will also take the load off the pcs. Then at least if the pc gets turned off etc I won't lose the printer.

Sounds like the best solution.

Network print servers like the JetDirect 170x are around the £100/$175 and up but you can pick them up on eBay for a lot less.

We're trying to get rid of all but networked printers here because it makes management a lot simpler.
