I am interested in anyone's experiences in bringing a Windows 2000 server online in an existing NT Domain. The domain had a PDC and BDC. I am not ready to move from an NT domain and am interested in my options when bringing this server up. Does this have to be a "member server?" I assume it can not be brought up as a domain controller.
Has anyone had any problems bringing a 2000 server into an exsisting nt domain?

Hi Kes,

From my experience Win2k servers work fine as member servers in a NT 4.0 environment. We've added 3 win2k member servers over the past few months for file and print and also DNS and haven't experienced any problems. We can manage the servers fine from Server Manager and view services, shares etc like any other NT4.0 server. All the net commands, etc all work too :)

I've heard nightmare stories regarding Win2k BDC's in a NT 4.0 environment but haven't had any experience myself on that front.

It's impossible to have a W2K server fill any sort of Domain Controller role in an NT4 domain without forcing a migration to Active Directory.

You should have no problem running a W2K member server in an NT4 domain. One thing that's nice is that you get the Administrative Terminal services free with your W2K member server, and the W2K 'Manage Computer' tool is much better than any enterprise tool Microsoft provided with NT4 (although still not as good as Hyena!)

I have one W2K domain server under domain A, and an NT4 domain server under domain B. I dont have any problem accessing both..

is this what your asking for?

No, I am just dealing with one domain and I wanted (have already done it, actually) to add a windows 2000 server to an existing NT domain. It went smoothly. I think there are now just a few details to work out as far as authenticating to the domain. I think shackdaddy's answer was right on the money........a windows 2000 server can't be a domain controller in an NT domain enviroment. That was what I really wanted to verify.
Thanks for the help.
