Hi All!

We are adding our first 2003 domain controller to the 2000 domain. I followed the instructions in KB325379 which included running the newer version of adprep from the 2k3 CD. All connectivity tests outlined in the article were successful. The running of ADPREP seemed to go successfully last saturday and I was going to promote the first 2k3 domain controller this morning. Upon running dcpromo this morning I received the error that the domain needed to be updated for 2003. After looking through the event logs I did find one event (on an existing DC but not the same DC I ran adprep on) that worried me but nothing else. The error was:

**********START**************
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: NTDS Replication
Event Category: (5)
Event ID: 1586
Date: 10/28/2006
Time: 10:02:26 AM
User: Everyone
Computer: DC03VAR7SL9
Description:
The checkpoint with the PDC was unsuccessful. The checkpointing process will be retried again in four hours. A full synchronization of the security database to downlevel domain controllers may take place if this machine is promoted to be the PDC before the next successful checkpoint. The error returned was: The replication operation failed because of a schema mismatch between the servers involved.

*********End**************

Now this only appeared once immediately following the running of the adprep. We also have an exchange 2003 server on the domain. I did not follow the instructions for Exchange 2000 since this is not what we are currently running. Did I need to go through that process as well? Will it hurt anything to run the adprep again?

Thanks

Problem resolved.

Since the new server ordered was a 2003r2 OS a newer version of ADprep was necessary. We used the first CD of 2003r2 that was provided with the server. 2003r2 comes with 2 cds and the first is only a "slim version" of 2003sp1. All of the updates for r2 are on the second cd along with the latest version of adprep. Here is the article:

Updating AD with this will also be necessary if you are going from SP1 to r2.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

Quote from the top of this article: "Several glossy Microsoft presenters have stated that all you need to do to complete a Windows 2003 Domain upgrade is run ADPREP and then upgrade away. This may work for very small / simple environments but it is definitely not good advice for most companies. After upgrading five servers in two unrelated domains and installing many fresh copies of 2003 I can say that I personally would not skip a single step in the process I have developed below."
