I recently added a new harddrive(Western Digital 120 GB) to my HP Pavilion 750n computer. The 750n came with Windows XP Home and an 80GB harddrive. I wanted to put another harddrive in so I could install Windows 2000 without losing XP or the original HP features.

The problem I am having is after installing the new harddrive, the new 120 GB harddrive shows that it is only 33.8 GB. Why doesn't it show all 120 GB and how can I resolve this problem.

Thanks

If you partitioned it with a single 120 GB partition or multiple partions all larger than 32 GB), and formatted it with the FAT 32 file system, then you either have to:
-Use the NTFS file system if you want to use a single partition or multiple partitions larger than 32 GB.
-Use partitions 32 GB or smaller if you want to use the FAT 32 file system.

Like ski said,if you havnt already, definately partion in NTFS (If you have a Cadillac, why drive the Ford Pinto).

Is it the OS thats not seeing the full capacity? Is BIOS seeing the full capacity. It never hurts to go into BIOS and check the drive settings. In your case you wont have to manually insert drive parameters. If BIOS dont see the full cap, use the Auto Detect option in your BIOS to detect the drive in question. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the information. I will try it when I get home from work

I finally got it to work. I had originally set it up as to boot from. This only allowed 34 gb to be seen. I changed it to just be a storage device and now I can see the whole 111 gb.

Another unrelated matter. After my minor success, I tried installing Windows 2000 Pro on my newly installed newly partitioned hard drive. After what I thought was a successful install, I rebooted only to discover that Windows 2000 didn't like the kernel, whether because it was possibly looking at xp's or if it was just messed up, I have no idea. Now I can't see any of my original hard drive except the HP hidden partion, can't use F10 to restore my system, can't log into windows xp. I have tried fdisk, boot disks, and F10 all to no avail. So a little lesson learned, if you are going to try something new make sure it is on either a old computer or a computer that is not in use. Thankfully I have an old computer that I can at least check out the forums for help.

You probably munged XPs Boot sector.
Unhook the drive completely
Reset the jumpers on Main drive if you moved them for Install (which you shouldn't have b/c a Boot Drive does NOT get added as a Slave - in general)
Boot from XP CDROM and enter Recovery Console, if it's even possible with an HP.
Run Chkdsk
at C:\> type
CHKDSK C: /f /r
(i forget, but one switch implies the other, I can't recall which, so use both the Fix and Recover switches)

if no go;
at C:\> type FIXBOOT
if no go -
also then try FIXMBR
