Suddenly I get the "add new hardware wizard" everytime I start Windows 98. And the strange thing is that I have not added any new hardware. The message "the wizard searches for new drivers for Unknown Device" is also present and I have been unable to determine the identity of the "Unknown Device". If I let the wizard try and search for the drivers it comes up empty-handed--no drivers can be found. I don't know what CD's to try because the device is unidentified. How can I resolve this issue with the "add new hardware wizard"? Right now I just click cancel and let the boot-up process continue but it is annoying. Any suggestions, advice or assistance? Thanks in advance for any comments received.

I have a yellow exclamation mark next to a PS/2 compatible mouse port device. How do you handle this?

You both have device driver problems. You need to re-install your drivers. You may need to remove the devices from Device Manager and re-boot and let Windows find the drivers and re-install them. This has worked for me in the past. If anyone else has more info, please share it. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Here's a shortcut to the post from 'nobrain': When using Device Manager, if you delete a device (driver) and want Windows to re-detect it, you can press the "Refresh" button instead of rebooting. This is really handy.

The original problem of 'unknown device' is a bit more tricky. When I build systems, I know exactly what Device Manager should show so it's no mystery when I get an 'unknown device'. For instance, if you have a modem installed but not appearing on Device Manager then the unknown device is your modem. I don't know of a shortcut to diagnose such a problem, other than disassemble the computer, delete all devices and force windows to redetect everything as you install them.
