Could someone help me out with this? I am networking my computers in my home office. I have Win2k Adv Server setup on 'Server1' as a domain controller. The domain is MYDOMAIN. My second computer is 'family' and it is a part of the workgroup WG. I want to convert 'family' from a workgroup computer and put it on my MYDOMAIN network. When I try to do the conversion (through properties in network identification), I try to change it to a member of MYDOMAIN and log in using a user account on 'Server1' (the account is already setup and I've been using it for e-mail for months). I'm getting an error "the credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials". I know there's something I need to setup on 'Server1' to add 'Family' to MYDOMAIN that is controlled by 'Server1'.

Could someone take me step-by-step on setting it up properly on both machines?

Question: Will all the user accounts on 'Family' be void once I make it a member of MYDOMAIN? In other words, will I still be able to have an Administrator account on 'Family' so I can administer 'Family's' user accounts, permissions, etc? How does that work?

First make sure that the account you are using to add the "family" comp has permission to add new computers to the domain. If you have a domain admin account, that should work.
Next, once you switch the workgroup comp over to being a member of the domain, you can set up users accounts in the domain, then set the profile of the user account to use the profiles of the domain accounts. An easy way to do this is to install Active Directory and set the profile path of the users account to use a domain profile. Once the computer becomes a member of the domain, the local users accounts will not be able to log onto the domain, however, they will be able to log on to the local computer (family), with restricted access to the domain.
Regarding why you can't add the computer, if you have the correct permissions to add and you are still unable, look in event viewer for the error and run over to and look it up.
Hope this helps.

MCP, A+

Thanks for your help! I realized that I still had directory mapped. Once I removed that, I was able to become a member of MYDOMAIN.

How do I get rid of this thread? Does it filter down the list on its own?
