I have XP Pro SP2 behind a router. It is fully updated (Windows)and up to date with AV. I have Spybot S & D as well as Windows Defender. The Defender, AV and Spybot scans are all clean.

I have used AwAware for ages but, several months ago it showed me a BSOD transiently when I tried to update the definitions and then it rebooted immediately. I've uninstalled AdAware, downloaded it again and reinstalled but the BSOD and reboot recur. I've tried to run it in Safe Mode but the result is the same when I try to update it. I've run it with the current definitions and my PC's clean.

I'd add that the BSOD is shown very transiently, for a second or so and, as it fills the screen with text, I haven't got a clue about the warning that it's giving me because I don't have time to read it.

Any ideas? If I can't get this to run/update normally, do I need an AdAware-like product in addition to what I have already and, if so, what would anyone recommend?

Thanks for your time.

With what you are running from a Security point of view, Ad-Aware could probably be removed without too many adverse effects.

To get further information about any error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

Good tip about the Event Viewer - I'd not thought about looking there for a clue!
