Hi to all,

I just found out that our server here is running, for three years now, AD without DNS configured to it... we have 50 users on the W2K server, and it is configured to serve also as our gateway to internet. (2 nics configuration).

I want to also add that we don't have any problems accessing the internet.

Question 1) What is the pros and cons of this setup.

Question 2) Can I setup another box to server as a backup server so that when its down... everybody will be shifted to that server automatically.... specially the logon service.

I always thought in order to make a server a domain controller you need to setup active directory which in turn automatically sets up DNS (Active Directory Integrated).

Do you have a Primary DNS server setup in your enviroment?

There is no Active Directory without DNS.

When you promote your server you will have to be able to reach an Active Directory DNS server to complete the promotion. If one cannot be reached i.e., the server you are promoting is to be the root domain, then Windows will prompt you to allow it to set up DNS automatically or allow you to configure it yourself after promotion.
However, the service itself will be installed regardless of which choice you make.

Thanks for al your response...

"or allow you to configure it yourself after promotion"

ok... lets assume that we did allow it to configure it later... which we never did....

back to same question...

Click on start --> programs --> administrative tools and see if you have a DNS icon in there.

yes i do but no zone on both forward and reverse...

Glifex,

I followed the instructions but I dont have these info...

" Four folders with the following names are present when DNS is correctly registering the Active Directory DNS records. These folders are labeled:
_msdcs
_sites
_tcp
_udp

If these folders do not exist, DNS is not registering the Active Directory DNS records. These records are critical to Active Directory functionality and must appear within the DNS zone. You should repair the Active Directory DNS record registration. "

What should I do...
