Hi all,

I keep getting this error message on one of my DC in a 2 windows 2000 DC setup. This is the only error message I get on this server. I checked all of the usual network connectivity stuff and all is good.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: NTDS Replication
Event Category: (5)
Event ID: 1586
Date: 12/6/2004
Time: 4:06:00 PM
User: Everyone
Computer: IPI-BDC2
Description:
The checkpoint with the PDC was unsuccessful. The checkpointing process will be retried again in four hours. A full synchronization of the security database to downlevel domain controllers may take place if this machine is promoted to be the PDC before the next successful checkpoint. The error returned was: The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure.

I've gone through about 50 things I found at M$ etc and no luck. Starnge thing is KCC and everything else seems ok. I'm think it's something with my 2 DNS servers, bot AD integrated, one standard seconday.

Any Ideas

One first thing to check is that you have the Service Packs installed.
Then to start with.

Thanks Marc,

Been through both of those, no luck. Any other thoughts?

Update!

Figured it out. My DC had a full name of <server> rather than <server.mydomain.com>. Found a VB script to fix it without having to demote/ promote the DC. MS KB 257623
