AD namespace

I get a little confused about this...

If i wanna make a dedicated root domain say xxx-root.net to hold schema and ent admin.

but my top domain should be xxx.net not top.xxx-root.net

how does this work in DNS/AD ?

hope it is clear what im asking.

Correct your top level Active Directory domain would be xxx-root.net with another domain below that called corporate.xxx-root.net or whatever.

Also keep in mind that it's recommend to not use .com, .net, .org, etc for your internal DNS name. You should use .local, .int, .prv, .private, etc.

but our big customer has xxx-root.net as root and xxx.net as top. how is this done ?

That can be done by having xxx-root.net as the forest root, with xxx.net in the same forest but a new tree in the forest.
