AD Contact: Email address is not being displayed in Outlook 2000

I have created a group of contacts in Active Directory. Under exchange system manager, I have also created a group with the necessary filter. From outlook I can see the group of contacts and select any one of them. When I view the properties of the contact, all the information is there except for email address. I have checked the contact information entered in Active Directory and the email address is entered. I have attemted to send emails using these contacts but I allways get a cannot send message from the system. It appears to me that the email information from active directory is not getting translated correctly to outlook.
