ActiveX popups

Is anyone getting those popups that dont even need a browser running? Usually they are ads for apps that block those kind of popups. Can anyone suggest some good software that will get rid of these? Adaware and spybot dont do it.

If they say "Windows Messenger" at the top, their not an active-x popup, they're part of the Windows Messenger Service. This can be disabled through the control panel: go to administrative tasks --> services --> scroll down the list of programs until you find Windows Messenger Service --> select properties --> select a startup type of disabled.

Alternatively, try some more of the anti-spyware tools from faq608-3482.

Or you can run a firewall which is a good idea anyway, especially in light of the recent MSblater worm.

I just turned messenger off, I'll post again to let you know if it worked. What else might this cut off? anything I might not want to?

Windows Messenger Service exists purely to popup messages. In corporate offices, this can be fairly useful (e.g. sysadmin can send a message saying &quot;Server xxx will be going down in 10 minutes. Please save your work.&quot It's not used by many home users!

Sweet, thanks alot man. I ran with messenger off all last night and no problems. That is exactly the fix I was looking for.
