ActiveX controls missing

Does anyone have any ideas as to why ActiveX controls would not appear on a worksheet?

I am trying to add ActiveX controls to my worksheet, but they will not show up. I can get the control toolbox, pick eg command button, and drag it to draw a button but then it disappears. I can click on the area where I drew it and the handles will show up, I can view properties, view code, but still no button.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am stuck at this point.
