Hi Everyone.

I am looking to investigate/learn some active directory skills.

I currently work in an organisation where we do not have AD but are planning it for the future, however, I am looking to leanr as much of it as I can now, but can only find sites that either want me to go to college or pay $500 for a training CD.

Does anyone know of any good, free training for Active Directory administration and how it works?

Thanks and Regards,
Mike Firth

My personal recomendation is to get a PC and install Win2000 (or 2003) and start playing. You will learn more this way then by just trying to read about (in my opinion). If you are short on hardware MS has just release there new Virtual Server Software so you could run Windows Server 2003 in a virtual machine on your PC. Great for testing and learning.

Once you have it up and running you can then use a PC as a client, join your domain, create user accounts and start playing....

Lots of articles on the MS site... Promoting to a DC, user management..

I would like some articles but I gots to go!

Good luck!

Mike

VMWare will also work
so will connectix and microsoft virtual PC (although server platforms are not supproted on virtual PC)

however...you aren't going to learn anything real about AD by just installing

read a book and save me a few calls over at microsoft

almost got a paragraph there :)

Definitely get some books and do some reading. Mastering Windows 2003 by Mark Minasi is decent.

You may also want to browse around on technet (microsoft.com/technet). There is a ton of information there.

What's up bwils? :) I remember seeing you in the queue during my MS days.

Hi Chaps,

Thanks for the info, I think I'll use a bit of all your advice and probably buy a book, download VMware, Connectix and MS Virtual Server (already downloading!) and have a play around on Technet.

Will have to save up for the book though, they always cost too much.....typical Microsoft.

So did you guys work for MS or were you queueing up for something else? Like handing in an issues list or something :)

Thanks,
Mike Firth

Ahhhh.....would you look at that...

Mastering Windows 2003....50% downloaded off Overnet. ;)

I want to give you all a star!
