From what I know, in a mixed mode environment, all user logons will have to be processed by the PDC emulator, right? So, if I have a mixed mode environment in one building (creating my forest root at one site, but not converting any clients there to the new AD infrastructure) and then install another DC (2000) for the same domain at another site, the logon will happen through authentication from
a: Local user to local DC at the site, then
b:DC at the site to the PDC emulator at the forest root for authentication
c: local DC back to the client to logon...
or roughly like this right?
I just wanted to know, in all the traffc that ensues in this kind of setup, how WAN intensive is this? I have about +- 500 users that need to logon at the remote site to one common domain...

Excellent. and well written too. That's answered my question, and lots of others too...
thanks Jason.
