Can any one help please

I am using active directory zones on my domain controller and have just promoted a server to a DC do I also have to install dns on the new dc ifso how do I do it and will it automaticly copy all the dns zones etc from my old dc to the newly promoted one so effectivly it becomes a backup dns server?

Many thanks

No, DNS is not set up automatically.
However, it is a good idea to have more than one DNS server on your network.

You have to install DNS on the new DC. Also, on the DC that was already running DNS, Add the new DNS DC as an authoritive nameserver for all of the zones that you want to replicate to that new DC. It will now be authoritive and able to answer DNS inqueries after to zones replicate.

thanks for that

how do I create the new DC as a authorative nameserver I already have an entry for it in my forward and reverse lookup zones?

Sorry im a little new to DNS

Thanks again

After thinking about it a little more. If you simply install DNS on that DC and you say you have Active Directory integrated zones, then AD will actually replicate the DNS zones to that new DC for you. You need not do anything else but be patient for the zones to replicate. AD will make that DC authorive for you.

Without dns, you don't have active directory. Install dns and good luck.
