Acrobat OSX conflict?

After installing acrobat 5.1 over acrobat 5 all attempts to open any PDF file result in the endless spinning of that nasty little OSX wheel thingy.
Force quit has to be invoked.
Reinstallation of acrobat 5 plus the 5.1 update does not solve the problem.
Any suggestions ? ? ?
