Accidentally formatted flash disk 2

My stomach sank to my toes when I realized I had hit the 'Format' icon instead of the one I was looking for, and all the pictures and video clips I had taken on my digital camera that day (which were many) were suddenly gone....

I've heard formatting only erases the FAT, but the data is still there, and can be recovered with some effort. Can somebody please give me, or direct me to, a good primer on recovering lost files from CompactFlash cards? Thanks!
