Is it possible to access a Samba server from a computer that is NATed and thus also behind a firewall (ie. is there a way to make the connection tcp only)

Of course.
Why don't you detail this problem a little
better?

Either you need to configure a static nat mapping
with a one to one translation from public to private
address, or you need to forward your smb based port
traffic to the samba server if the samba server is
'behind a firewall'. Otherwise you should have no
trouble connecting from a masqueraded client if your
fw config is correct.
