I have a seriously wounded harddrive. I think it probably suffered a head crash. I did get into it once after it was damaged, and backed up its files. Unfortunately, the backup turned out to be bad. The drive itself was subsequently formatted by a Windows reinstall.
Spinrite has been through it once in its emergency mode, but is encountering heavy problems. I have not yet run it in its maintenance mode where it will isolate bad sectors.
Getdataback for NTFS will read it for a while, encountering several disk problems in the process, but eventually hangs the entire machine. EasyRecovery Professional from ontrack also eventually locks up.
I have a Knoppix boot CD, and Knoppix is able to read the disk. However, it only sees what the Windows install put in place. Is there a program that will run under Knoppix to recover the files on the disk?
Another suggestion I had was to copy the disk sectors to another drive. Can anyone tell what programs can do this kind of copy? Can Ghost do it?
Thanks.
