Does anyone know why, when I type \\hompc23\c$, i get a dialog box to enter the username for the Guest account. I have no option to enter any other username. In the username field, hompc23\Guest is suppressed and shaded out so I can't enter my username, or any other for that matter. Do I disable the guest account on the remote cpu? I already created a user account on the remote cpu with the same credentials as the cpu I'm accessing it with.

Another dumb file sharing quirk I SHOULD know by now.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The Windows XP Guest account is used in the Windows XP Home Edition and in Windows XP Professional when it is not a domain member.
The Guest account has been designed to perform special functions with network shares and security. In these environments, you must NOT disable the Guest account.

If the RestrictAnonymous registry value is set to 1 and the Guest account is enabled on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based file server, Windows Explorer on the Windows XP-based client computer cannot show the contents of a share on the Windows 2000-based file server, even if you have permission on the share. When this problem occurs, you receive the following error message:

Windows cannot find '\\server\share\'. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking Search.

mrfixit, it took me a little bit to find the reg key, is this where you were talking about?:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/SeCEdit/Reg Values/Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Lsa/RestrictAnonymous

There are two Reg_SZ entries, and two REG_DWORD entries.
The two DWORD entries are DisplayType and ValueType. My ValueType entry is set to 4 and Hexadecimal, not 1.

I'm a bit confused about what I'm supposed to do. My Guest account is enabled, would it harm to disable it?...how about on all cpus?
